It’s a new world in the Fall of 2020 and EVERY librarian, both those who were already using distance and internet tools and those that had not yet gotten there, are facing the necessity of leaping in, feet first, and figuring out how to work with their students, parents and colleagues in an unsettled and changing milieu. As we watch school systems waffle between virtual and F2F teaching as infection data rolls in, teachers are being assigned to new roles and flexibility and readiness become even more important than they always were. Using a combination of technologies this course will encourage structured exploration, team-work and sharing to take advantage of well-known distance and internet tools to preserve, explore and expand our librarian roles.
We will start with a survey of the range of restrictions and expectations of MA school districts (in the building, not in the building, loaning books, not loaning books, teaching lessons, doing NOTHING, reassigned but still expected to do the library job!) and then we’ll expand our vision to include best practice in a flexible and responsive approach to being a school librarian. The class will include four synchronous Zoom meetings (TBA, once we know everyone’s schedule) as well as extensive online communication, small work-groups, open whole-group discussions and final project sharing. Each student will be required to identify one specific area of most concern to them and to develop a project providing carefully curated resources and guidelines for dealing with the topic which can support library practice.

Course description: This course is for Spanish Teachers of all levels, who would like to hone their skills regarding information that might not often come up in their textbooks. It is an Advanced Course, designed to pinpoint areas that have historically been prone to misinterpretation. This is not a course on verb pairs such as “ser y estar” or “preguntar y pedir” but rather, an examination of some of the vocabulary choices and grammar guidelines that if tweaked, could improve the precision with which we use the language. Also included are updates to La RAE. This is a place for teachers to review, reacquaint, learn, and in some cases, relearn, and to practice in a structured environment.

App smashing is best defined as taking two or more apps and combining them together to create something new that would not otherwise have been possible. It is fun, engaging, and results in expanded creative possibilities for students and teachers while tapping into higher order skills. In this class, participants will engage in a hands-on exploration of apps including Padlet, Explain Everything, Seesaw, Thinglink, Aurasma, BookCreator, and Tellagami and consider ways in which to smash these apps together for greater impact. Participants will also collaborate with each other to generate a master list of app smashing “recipes” and project ideas that they can take with them to implement into their classrooms.
This course is an introduction to a broad range of topics related to student developmental disabilities, including categories of cognitive, physical, emotional, and learning delays. The inclusion of students into educational environments will be highlighted. Topics will include:
History of special education and inclusion
Laws which govern inclusion, IDEA, and the integration of students with disabilities
Family concerns and challenges
Current and future trends and best practices
Specific disability exploration and knowledge through readings documentaries and case study analysis
Best practices in Universal Design for Instruction for students with disabilities and diverse learning styles
Supporting the successful transition to post-secondary environment
